A 23 year old Eagle Mountain man was shot and killed after he threatened a 17 year old hostage with a large knife.

On June 12, 2016, shortly after 8:30 PM, Deputies with the Utah County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a man threatening to commit suicide in Eagle Mountain. The man's wife called telling dispatchers that her husband had a knife and was holding a 17 year old girl hostage. She told dispatchers her husband would not let the girl go. The woman and two young children were outside the home and her 23 year old husband was inside the home with the a 17 year old female relative as a hostage.

When Deputies arrived at the home they made contact with the suspect and engaged him in conversation. During the course of the conversation the suspect disengaged from Deputies multiple times. At one point he began telling them he would kill the hostage in 60 seconds. Several Deputies entered the home and encountered the suspect physically holding the hostage and threatening her with a large kitchen knife. The suspect was preventing the hostage from leaving and was threatening to kill her. When the threat to the victim's life became immediate a Deputy fired one shot at the suspect, killing him.

The Officer Involved Shooting team with the Utah County Attorney's Office is conducting an investigation. The Deputy who fired the shot is on paid administrative leave while this investigation continues. The suspect's body will be take to the Office of Medical Examiner where an autopsy will be conducted.
