The Utah County Sheriff's Office will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Geneva Road in Orem on the weekend of Halloween.

The Utah County Sheriff's Office has been given approval to conduct a sobriety checkpoint on SR-114, Geneva Road, in Orem. The location is mile marker 4, south of University Parkway. The checkpoint is approved to operate any time between 6:00 PM, October 28 through 3:00 AM, November 1. The primary hours will be from 3:00 PM Saturday to sometime early Sunday morning, although it can be in operation any time during the approved hours.

The purpose of the checkpoint is to deter impaired driving. Impaired driving and other drug and alcohol related offenses can be especially problematic around the Halloween holiday. This particular holiday regularly sees a significant increase in the number of impaired drivers on the road. Those who choose to drive while impaired create significant risk for others on the road. When a driver approaches the checkpoint they are asked if they have consumed any substances that might impair their ability to drive safely. For the vast majority of those who drive through the checkpoint they are delayed less than a minute. If a Deputy sees something consistent with alcohol or drug related illegal activity that car will be moved off the road while an investigation is conducted. Sadly, sobriety checkpoints at this location have historically discovered numerous DUI's and other alcohol and drug related criminal violations.
