The Utah County Sheriff's Office recieved a report from the Medical Examiners Office on the Manner and Cause of death for Iron man participant-John Boland. The Iron Man competition was held in Utah County on June 8, 2002.

The Office of the Medical Examiner released a report on the cause of death relating to Iron Man participant-John Boland. The manner of death was an accident, and the immediate cause has been listed as a Drowning. The opinion of the Medical Examiners office was that the 53 year old male, John Boland died of drowning. The deceased was a contestant in the Iron Man competition and during the swimming event, John was found floating face down in the water. The water was choppy at the time of the event. Microscopically, small patches of interstitial fibrosis were noted in the sections of both right and left ventricle of the heart. These foci may have precipitated a cardiac rhythm disturbance but this cannot be confirmed. Sgt. Dennis Harris/ Public Information Officer/ Utah County Sheriff Office
