A semi-truck trailer ignites on the offramp near Santaquin.

In the early morning hours of July 16, 2003, a man driving a semi-truck and hauling three box trailers noticed smoke pouring out of the trailer just behind the cab of his truck.

The driver was traveling South bound on I-15, in the Santaquin area, when he noticed the smoke. Consequently, he exited the freeway at exit #245 and pulled over, on the off ramp, to evaluate the situation.

Reported by Sgt. Yvette M. Rice; Public Information Officer for the Utah County Sheriff's Office. (Office) 851-8053. (Cell) 420-3745.

The driver was able to separate the cab and the other two trailers from the smoking trailer before it spontaneously ignited. This quick action prevented the fire from spreading to the second trailer which contained about 500 pounds of fireworks.

Fire personnel from the Utah County Sheriff's Office, Santaquin City, and Payson City responded to contain the trailer fire and evacuated one home and one business in the area. No injuries were reported during the incident and HAZMAT clean-up personnel were on scene to clean the area after the fire burnt itself out.

The trailer that was smoking contained 18,000 pounds of batteries that were damaged and leaking. The damaged batteries had been recently picked up from Hill Air Force Base.
