Search and Rescue Assists Trapped Caver
Rescuers assisted a 23 year old man who was stuck in Nutty Putty cave for nearly eight hours.
| On September 4, 2004, at about 1:15 A.M., members of the Utah County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team, along with members of Utah Cave Rescue, responded to Nutty Putty Cave, on Lake Mountain, between Utah Lake and Cedar Valley, for the second time in two weeks to rescue a man who was stuck in a narrow passage. The man, David Crowther, 23, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, lives in Provo and attends BYU. He and two friends entered the cave about 10:30 P.M. Friday night. After being in the cave for about two hours he attempted to negotiate a narrow passage when he got stuck. Friends and other cavers were unable to get Mr. Crowther loose so one of them went to the surface and used a borrowed cell phone to call for help. Rescuers were able to help David move about a foot, but could move him no further. Using a portable air chisel, rescuers were able to break a small amount of rock away from David which then allowed them to get him out of the area where he was trapped. An ambulance with Juab County Ambulance Service responded to the area but ended up not being needed. Mr. Crowther suffered no serious injuries and was treated at the scene and released. |
