CURBSIDE RECYCLING
What Is Curbside Recycling?
Curbside recycling is the collection, processing and reuse of non-hazardous materials. These materials primarily include paper, cardboard, plastic, steel/aluminum cans, and glass. Look for items with a recycling logo and numbers 1 & 2. (Numbers 3 through 7 are also acceptable in some areas. Check with your local entity.) Items are separated from the normal household waste stream by the homeowner and placed in special bins for pickup under a local program or dropped off directly at a recycling facility. |
Why Should You Recycle?
-- Recycling saves much of the energy and resources it takes to produce new household containers.
-- Recycling keeps reusable products out of landfills, thus extending the life of existing landfills and eliminating the need for new locations.
- -Recycling creates a unique infrastructure which provides new business and employment opportunities.
Pre-cycling
Pre-cycling goes hand-in-hand with recycling. Pre-cycling is reducing the amount of waste a household creates based on decisions made before buying or using a product.
-- Avoid buying items that are packaged in non-recyclable materials such as Styrofoam, foam-backed cartons, or foil-backed paper.
- -Whenever possible, re-use glass bottles, plastic bags, and plastic bottles.
-- Invest in Tupperware-like containers that can be used over and over.
- -Invest in re-usable "green bags" for grocery store and other shopping.
-- If stores offer a choice between paper and plastic, choose paper.
--Invest in a tap-water filtering device to avoid buying bottled water.
Recycling Guidelines
Following these tips will help keep your recycling costs lower. Check with your local entity for their specific guidelines, as well as a list of materials that they can accept.
-- Empty all contents from the recyclable item.
- -For plastic bottles, it is recommended that the tops be removed before recycling.
- -For cans and bottles, outside labels should be removed.
-- For paper, make sure it is not contaminated with food items.
- -Do not recycle paper towels, plastic wrappers, food items, or plastic bags
- -Plastic bags should not be discarded in the general trash; take them back to the grocery store so they can be recycled.
- -Consider composting your household food waste.
