***** UPDATE ***** 3:50 P.M., May 26, 2013. The man killed in the crash in Eagle Mountain this morning is Jimmy Ren Pearson, age 42. Pearson is from Utah.
At 7:32 A.M. on May 26, 2013, Deputies with the Utah County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a report of a crash on State Road 73 at mile marker 30 in Eagle Mountain. The crash involved a white 2003 Chevrolet Malibu driving east and a 2012 Dodge Ram pickup driving west. The pickup was towing a horse trailer with two horses inside. At this location the driver of the Malibu swerved directly into the path of the pickup and the driver of the pickup was unable to avoid a collision. The collision was so severe that it drove the Chevrolet over 100 feet backwards and tore it completely in half. The driver of the Chevrolet was partially ejected from his car and was killed on impact. The driver of the pickup and his 16 year old grand daughter both sustained non-life threatening injuries. The driver was released at the scene of the crash and his grand daughter was taken by ambulance to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.
Witnesses reported that they saw the driver of the Chevrolet swerving all over the road and onto the dirt shoulder on the opposite side of the road. The driver of the pickup also reported that he saw the driver of the Chevrolet swerving all over the road just before the crash. One of the horses in the trailer also died in the crash. The other horse suffered cuts and scrapes but appeared to be otherwise in good condition.
At this point investigators are unsure what cause the driver of the Chevrolet to drive as witnesses described. The victim's body was taken to the Office of Medical Examiner in Salt Lake City. Release of the deceased victim's name is being withheld pending notification of family members.
