A Provo man was arrested for sexual exploitation charges after a 3 month investigation. He was arrested on charges out of Virginia and new charges in Utah. He was booked into the Utah County Jail.
Recently detectives with the Fairfax County Police Department in Fairfax, Virginia contacted the FBI in Utah regarding a case they were investigating. The case involved a man in Utah who made contact via the internet with a person he believed to be a 14 year old girl in Virginia. In reality he made contact with a police detective posing as a 14 year old girl. Their investigation began on May 14, 2013. During the course of the suspect's communications with the victim he sent pornographic pictures of himself. These communications were done by cell phone, chat websites, and Yahoo Messenger.
Investigators in Virginia obtained investigative subpoenas and were able to determine the name and location of the suspect in Provo. Around the end of July they contacted the FBI in Utah and were referred to the Utah Valley Special Victims Task Force. This Task Force is comprised of detectives and prosecutors from various agencies in Utah County. Participating agencies today included Utah County Sheriff's Office, Provo Police, Orem Police, and the Utah County Attorney's Office. Investigators here obtained a search warrant for the suspect's residence and any computers, telephones, or storage media owned by the suspect.
Just after noon today detectives went to the current residence of the suspect near 700 North University Avenue in Provo and executed a search warrant. The suspect was not at home so detectives went to the home of his parents in Orem and found the suspect there. Detectives seized a laptop computer and a cell phone that belonged to the suspect. On that computer they found pornographic images of juveniles.
The suspect in this case is Shaun Rulon Gordon, age 25, of Provo. Gordon was booked into the Utah County Jail for the NCIC warrant out of Fairfax, Virginia. He was also booked on four second degree felony counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. This investigation is ongoing and it is possible more evidence will be found and Gordon could face additional charges. Fairfax Police have said they will defer on their charges until the case here in Utah is resolved, at which point they will extradite Gordon to Virginia to face charges there.
