A Saratoga Springs man sustained severe head injuries in a rollover crash on Lake Mountain west of Utah Lake. The driver was booked into the Utah County jail for suspicion of DUI.
On August 25, 2013, at about 5:39 P.M., Deputies with the Utah County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a report of a rollover crash in Israel Canyon west of Utah Lake. The crash occurred on Lake Mountain Communication Road in Israel Canyon. This road leads to the top of Lake Mountain and is primarily used as a service access road for the radio and other communications towers at the top of the mountain. It is also frequently used by hunters and off road enthusiasts.
In this case there were 2 men and 2 women in an older model Jeep Wrangler driving up the road. As the driver attempted to negotiate a switchback turn she lost control and the Jeep rolled several times down a steep, rocky embankment where it came to rest about 50 feet below the road on a lower switchback. The Jeep did not have a top on and it came to rest upside down. None of the occupants were ejected but one passenger, Trevor Nielson, age 36, from Saratoga Springs, suffered severe head injuries and did not regain consciousness.
Along with Deputies with the Utah County Sheriff's Office, police officers from the Saratoga Springs Police Department responded to the scene of the crash. Medical personnel with Saratoga Springs Fire Department responded and a medical helicopter with AirMed also responded. The victim was taken by helicopter to University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City. The victim, is in extremely critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
Investigators at the scene of the crash found evidence that the vehicle occupants had been consuming alcohol. The driver admitted to consuming alcohol and a passenger also reported that he and the driver had been consuming alcohol. Witnesses who arrived at the crash shortly after it occurred reported to Deputies that a passenger removed a cooler from the Jeep prior to Deputies arriving. The driver, Dawn Lynn Grochowski, age 52, Saratoga Springs, was transported by ambulance to American Fork Hospital in American Fork. She sustained scrapes and abrasions and was treated and released. She was then arrested and transported to the Utah County Jail where she was booked on a charge of DUI-Injury Accident, a Class A-Misdemeanor. If the victim in this crash does not survive this charge could be enhanced at that time.
