A 68 year old Spanish Fork man died after he was struck while riding a bicycle near Spanish Fork.
On June 30, 2014, at 5:29 AM, dispatchers with Utah Valley Dispatch Special Service District received a call from a woman who said she had been driving and hit a someone riding a bicycle. The woman initially found parts of the bicycle but was unable to find the rider. Officers with Salem and Spanish Fork Police Departments were first on scene and found the victim. They described him as being in extremely critical condition. Salem medical personnel treated the victim and a LifeFlight helicopter responded. Medical personnel on scene initiated CPR. That treatment continued after LifeFlight arrived but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim in this case was Wayne Warner Harwood, age 68, from Spanish Fork.
The driver of the car said she was driving south on 1200 West with her two young children. The sun was starting to come up but it was still dark, with sunrise being around 6:00 AM. Harwood was wearing a helmet. Investigators said it is unclear which direction Harwood was traveling. His body was taken to the Medical Examiner's office in Salt Lake. This remains an active investigation.
