Seniors receive better protection with High Dose flu shots
PROVO, UTAH (September 15, 2014) - - Seniors, did you know there is a special flu vaccination just for individuals 65 years and older? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommend that all seniors receive an annual flu shot, and specifically suggest receiving the High Dose flu vaccine. Studies show that seniors get better protection with this vaccine.
The Utah County Health Department currently has High Dose flu vaccine in stock in its Provo, American Fork and Payson clinics. It will also be available at our upcoming community clinics, including:
- - Pleasant Grove City -- Wednesday, Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (70 South 100 East)
- American Fork Senior Center -- Thursday, Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (54 South Main)
- Springville Senior Center -- Friday, Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (65 East 200 South)
Studies show that seniors don't create as many antibodies against disease as younger individuals, so High Dose flu vaccine contains four times the immune-stimulating antigens against the virus (antigens fool the body into thinking you have the disease, so your body kicks into disease fighting mode and creates the antibodies that will -- in this case -- help prevent you from getting sick in the first place).
