The Utah County Sheriff’s Office has recently received several phone calls from concerned citizens. They are reporting that they are being contacted by a Utah County Sheriff’s Deputy, informing the citizen that they have an active warrant and requesting that the citizen pay the warrant over the phone, usually by using a money recharge card or green dot card. This is a SCAM!
The Utah County Sheriff’s Office will never request a citizen to pay a warrant over the phone or by a money transfer. A Sheriff’s Deputy will request that you either contact the Courts, or on some occasions will collect the money in person and issue a receipt. These scams are a great concern for the Utah County Sheriff’s Office and we are actively investigating these cases but have been unable to make an arrest, because the suspects are usually calling from out of state. We recommend citizens contact their local law enforcement agency if they are contacted by these scammers and report the fraud. The Sheriff’s Office will continue to work with both local and state law enforcement agencies, to stop these frauds.
