A 33 year old Utah County man was shot and killed after he charged a Deputy while holding a knife. The man had refused to comply with commands to drop the knife.
On April 30, 2016, at about 11:30 AM, a Deputy with the Utah County Sheriff's Office was working in the unincorporated Lake Shore area of Utah County, west of Spanish Fork. He was looking for Mark Daniel Bess, a 33 year old Utah County man. Bess had several arrest warrants, one of which was a felony warrant out of 3rd District Court in Salt Lake County.
The Deputy found Bess near a home in the area of 4900 South 3200 West, in the Lake Shore area of Utah County. Bess ran from the Deputy and the Deputy pursued him on foot. The Deputy then encountered Bess behind a barn at 4934 South 3200 West. Bess stopped and faced the Deputy and produced a knife. At this point Bess was 45'-50' from the Deputy. Witnesses report that the Deputy gave the Bess multiple commands to drop the knife but he refused to do so. While holding the knife Bess then charged the Deputy. When Bess was 10'-15' away the Deputy fired at least two shots, striking him in the head and body. Deputies and bystanders performed CPR on Bess until an AirCare medical helicopter arrived. Bess was flown to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center (UVRMC) in Provo. He was later pronounced dead at UVRMC.
Bess has been booked into the Utah County Jail 22 different times. His charges have included drug, assault, theft, domestic violence, probation violations, and traffic related charges. Some of those bookings have been warrants related to the criminal and traffic charges.
The Officer Involved Shooting team with the Utah County Attorney's Office is investigating this incident. The Deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is conducted.
