A Pleasant Grove man who went hiking in American Fork Canyon has not been heard from since Wednesday afternoon. SAR volunteers continue to search for him
*** PRESS RELEASE *** November 2, 2018: On Thursday, November 1, 2018, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a report of an overdue hiker. The missing person is Derrik Jenkins, age 28, of Pleasant Grove. He told family he was going hiking in the area of Box Elder Peak near Granite Flat Campground in American Fork Canyon. Derrik left and was last heard from Wednesday, October 31, around 4:30 PM. A US Forest Service employee found his car parked near Granite Flat Campground. Derrik was alone but he is an experienced hiker and trail runner. Family members say Derrik would have been prepared for a shorter term run, but not necessarily for multiple nights in the mountains. Volunteers with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team have been assisted in the search by a helicopter from the Utah Department of Public Safety and a fixed wing aircraft from the Sheriff's Office. Weather has been a concern, and some snow has fallen, but SAR teams will continue the search.
