The Utah County Sheriff’s Office conducted an Administrative Checkpoint on SR 114 near mile post 4 (in the unincorporated area of Utah County between Provo and Orem Cities on Geneva Road). The checkpoint was in operation from 10pm on Saturday June 27, 2009 until 3am on Sunday June 28, 2009 (five hours).
The primary purpose of this checkpoint was enforcement of Title 41, Chapter 6a, Part 5 of the Utah State Code Annotated (more specifically to inspect, verify, and detect drivers that may be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs). Additionally, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office wanted to raise the level of public awareness and inform citizens of the efforts that are being used to identify and apprehend impaired drivers and to create a deterrent effect through increased enforcement activity
During this checkpoint 11 individuals were arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail for suspected drunk driving, one of these individuals was charged with felony DUI because of prior DUI convictions. In addition, 10 other misdemeanor drug and alcohol citations were issued.
The Utah County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the general public for their patience and cooperation during this checkpoint. We have found checkpoints to be a very successful tool in keeping the roads safe from drunk drivers.
