On Monday, September 21, 2009 The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will be installing new signs alerting motorists that the speed limit on U.S. Highway 189 in Provo Canyon from Canyon View Park to the Deer Creek State Park entrance is permanently changed to 55 miles per hour.
UDOT conducted a thorough speed limit study in the canyon to determine if the 60 MPH and the 50 MPH zones are appropriate between the mouth of the canyon and Deer Creek Dam. This effort was scheduled to be done after the new roadway widening project from the Utah/Wasatch County line to the dam. The Department also consulted with the Utah Highway Patrol in Utah and the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office. Both agencies agreed the change would result in better enforcement because the speed limit would be consistent and reduce confusion among motorists as they drive through the canyon.
Both UHP and UDOT encourage all drivers to drive reasonably and at safe speeds in the canyon and to reduce their driving speeds in adverse weather conditions.
