New samples not contaminated, sales to resume

UPDATE 5/14 at 11am: The Utah Public Health Lab has confirmed the milk samples taken contained the same Salmonella Newport as the individuals that were part of this outbreak. This confirms our source of the bacteria as the raw milk. Current samples do not show contamination.

(Provo, May 13) -- The Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF), Utah Department of Health (UDOH) and the Utah County Health Department (UCHD) announced today that samples of unpasteurized milk were found to contain Salmonella from the time period in which six individuals were documented to have been ill with the disease. Health officials say they are currently testing to see the particular type of bacteria matches that found in patients in Utah, Salt Lake and Wasatch counties.

Sales of unpasteurized or raw milk were suspended at stores supplied by the dairy on April 23 pending investigation. Testing done on new milk have been found to meet standards set by Utah law as being acceptable to sell milk products, and permission to resume sales was communicated May 12 by UDAF.

"We are working with the dairy to identify the source of the salmonella," said Richard Clark, UDAF director of regulatory services. "Real Foods and Redmond Farms have been very helpful in researching this outbreak, and we appreciate their cooperation." Clark said UDAF and public health officials will continue to monitor both the products as well as alert physicians of how to watch for Salmonella in patients.

"Raw milk by its very nature is contaminated by bacteria," said Dr. Joseph Miner, UCHD executive director. "There certain types of bacteria, including salmonella or campylobacter, that can make people very ill. And the risk is always there when people are consuming unpasteurized raw milk products."

Other Key Points regarding this outbreak:

  • The first case was identified in Utah County as becoming sick on April 15th. Since that time, four individuals from Utah County, one from Salt Lake and one from Wasatch County have all tested positive for Salmonella Newport.
  • There are inherent risks associated with the consumption of raw milk (unpasteurized milk) due to the disease-causing bacteria commonly found in milk such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria, and E. coli.
  • Symptoms of these illnesses include: diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, headache, nausea and vomiting.
  • Raw milk contaminated with disease-causing bacteria will not smell or look different from non-contaminated milk. To prevent from getting ill from raw milk it is best not to consume it.
  • If you have consumed raw milk in recent days and are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your health care provider.
  • Certain groups of people are at increased risk for severe illness from the above mentioned diseases. These groups of people include: pregnant women, young children, the elderly and those with weakened or compromised immune systems.
