AMERICAN FORK – The two segments comprising the north bridge of Utah’s first Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) will be moved into place near the Main Street I-15 interchange June 4th and 6th.
The first span of the new bridge, with its 186-foot long concrete girders, will begin moving from the “bridge farm” construction area northwest of the interchange about 10:30 p.m. on Friday, June 4. It should be in its place just north of the existing bridge sometime during the early morning hours of Saturday, June 5.
The second span will begin moving at about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 6 and should be in place during the early morning hours of Monday, June 7.
The two inside lanes on I-15 will be closed at 8 p.m. each night so that temporary median barriers can be removed. While the 2,178-ton bridge spans are moving across the freeway and into place, I-15 traffic will be diverted to the on- and off-ramps at American Fork Main Street beginning at 10 p.m. both Friday and Sunday nights.
For public safety reasons, the existing Main Street bridge will be closed over the top of the freeway and extending eastward to the junction with US-89 (State Street) beginning at 9 p.m. both nights. Main Street will re-open and traffic will be restored to I-15 as soon as each bridge span is safely in place.
Those who wish to watch the bridge move may do so from the existing Main Street bridge both nights. Parking will be available at the park-and-ride lot southwest of the interchange. A flagger will be posted to help visitors enter the viewing area beginning at 9:30 p.m. Visitors will only be allowed to cross the freeway ramps to enter the viewing area at locations where a flagger is present. Seating will not be provided.
This new bridge is the second of two bridges that will form a DDI interchange at American Fork Main Street. This is the first such interchange in Utah and the second one in the United States (the first was opened last year in Springfield, MO.).
The new interchange will connect to UDOT’s new Pioneer Crossing road extending to state Route 68 (Redwood Road) in Saratoga Springs. Pioneer Crossing and the new DDI should be open later this summer.
