A woman was arrested after officers and deputies searched her belongings and found methamphetamine and marijuana in a child's diaper bag. This happened at a checkpoint in American Fork Canyon.

On Saturday, July 21, 2012, deputies with the Utah County Sheriff's Office conducted a sobriety checkpoint on SR-92 in American Fork Canyon at mile marker 10.9, just east of Timpanogos Cave. They were assisted in this by UHP, Utah State Parks, and U.S. Forest Service officers. The purpose of this checkpoint was to deter impaired driving. The majority of citizens coming through the checkpoint experienced only a very short delay. Those who exhibited signs of alcohol or drug use were delayed longer and there were a number of arrests.

Over 900 cars passed through the checkpoint, which was conducted beginning at 3:15 P.M. on July 21 and ended at about 12:30 A.M. July 22. Arrests made included 2 DUI arrests, 16 misdemeanor drug arrest, 1 felony drug arrest, numerous alcohol violations, and one vehicle was impounded.

Included in the arrests was an adult woman who was found to be in possession of methampetamine and marijuana. These items were found in her young child's diaper bag. In another case an adult male was arrested for DUI and was found to have an alcohol level of .166, more than twice the legal limit. He had his three sons, ages 12, 10, and 8, in his car with him at the time of his arrest. Deputies tried calling numerous family members and friends but were unable to reach anyone to pick up the three children. Ultimately they were taken into the custody of the Utah Division of Child and Family Services to be reunited with their mother, from whom the father is divorced.

While the volume of traffic and the number of arrests from this checkpoint were down from previous years Deputies believe the results were worth the time spent. It is also the belief of the Utah County Sheriff's Office that this checkpoint, and the resulting arrests, made it safer for law abiding citizens to enjoy their experience in American Fork Canyon.
