A 36 year old West Jordan man died on August 19, 2012, while swimming in Utah Lake.
On August 19, 2012, at about 7:00 P.M., Hoang Kim Trinh, 36, of West Jordan, was boating with friends on Utah Lake near American Fork boat harbor at the north end of the lake. Trinh's friends had recently repaired the boat and they decided to go to Utah Lake. While boating the boat broke down and as others tried to fix it Trinh jumped into the lake to swim. He was not wearing a life jacket. While in the water Trinh became distressed and started calling for help. A friend on the boat grabbed two life jackets and jumped in the lake to help Trinh. He reached Trinh but wind arose and the two were unable to hold onto the life jackets and became separated from them and the boat. A Park Ranger at Utah Lake State Park in Provo responded as well as Utah County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue members. SAR members were assisted with a boat by another citizen at the boat harbor who took them out on the lake. They located the two men and brought them onto their boat and returned to the marina. Both men were taken to the hospital where Trinh was pronounced dead. The other man suffered from mild hypothermia but is expected to recover fully. Trinh's body was taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Salt Lake City.
