The Deputy who shot a man who threatened to kill a hostage is identified.

As reported on June 12, 2016, Deputies with the Utah County Sheriff's Office in Eagle Mountain responded to a report of a 23 year old man threatening suicide on Summit Way. This man, Daniel Bennett Edwards, was found holding his wife's 17 year old niece hostage with a large knife. Edwards refused to comply with Deputy's orders to drop the knife and let the girl go. Following extended discussion with Edwards he began to threaten the girl, telling Deputies he was going to count down from 60 and then kill her. Because of the risk of death or serious bodily injury to the victim a Deputy fired one shot at Edwards, striking him in the head. Edwards died at the scene. The 17 year old victim received only minor injuries.

The Deputy, Brett Lawrenson, began his work with the Utah County Sheriff's Office in June 2008 as a part time reserve Deputy. In August of 2008 he was hired as a full time Deputy assigned to the Patrol Division. Deputy Lawrenson is a member of the SWAT team and is also a K9 handler. Before being hired by the Utah County Sheriff's Office he worked for 6 year for the Utah Department of Corrections at the Utah State Prison.
