The Utah County Sheriff's Office will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in American Fork Canyon on the weekend of Pioneer Day.

The Utah County Sheriff's Office has been given approval to conduct a sobriety checkpoint on SR-92 in American Fork Canyon. The location is mile marker 10.9, a short distance above Timpanogos Cave. The checkpoint is approved to operate any time between 1:00 PM, July 22 through 4:00 AM July 25. The primary hours will be from 1:00 that Friday to sometime early Saturday morning, although it can be in operation any time during the approved hours.

The purpose of the checkpoint is to deter impaired driving. More than 1.2 million people visit American Fork Canyon every year to fish, camp, hunt, ride off road vehicles, go horseback riding, picnic, or hike. Impaired driving and other drug and alcohol related offenses can be especially problematic with increased numbers of visitors. Those who choose to drive while impaired create significant risk for those who go to the canyon to enjoy what it has to offer. When a driver approaches the checkpoint they are asked if they have consumed any substances that might impair their ability to drive safely. For the vast majority of those who drive through the checkpoint they are delayed less than a minute. If a Deputy sees something consistent with alcohol or drug related illegal activity that car will be moved off the road while an investigation is conducted. Sadly, sobriety checkpoints at this location has historically discovered numerous alcohol and drug related criminal violations.
