Pioneer Day Weekend Checkpoint Produces Many Arrests

Posted On : 7/27/2016 9:45:53 PM

Pioneer Day weekend started with sobriety checkpoint that saw over 2,000 cars and numerous arrests for DUI, drug, and alcohol related offenses.

On Friday afternoon, beginning at about 2:45 PM, the Utah County Sheriff's Office conducted a sobriety checkpoint in American Fork Canyon at mile marker 10.9. The checkpoint was conducted until about 11:00 PM. The purpose of the checkpoint was to deter impaired driving. This date was chosen because of the Pioneer holiday weekend. During this weekend recreational areas like American Fork Canyon see a significant increase in traffic. While most people who use this resource do so responsibly, there are some who make poor decisions and misuse alcohol or choose to use illegal drugs. Sobriety checkpoints in American Fork Canyon have historically produced significant numbers of arrests for DUI, drug, and alcohol related arrests. This particular checkpoint was no different.

Total numbers for this checkpoint included 9 arrests for DUI, 5 arrests for alcohol violations, 25 arrests for drug related violations, and 9 vehicles were impounded.

In one of the DUI arrests Charles Douglas Pledger, age 35, of Pleasant Grove, was arrested for DUI and had his 4 year old daughter and 2 year old son in the car with him. Pledger had been drinking alcohol and had an open container of alcohol in his car with him. He was booked into jail and the children were released to their mother.

In another case 25 year old Carson Cory Boyce, age 25, of Draper, was arrested for DUI. He was found to be in possession of marijuana, LSD, Ketamine, and Mescaline, a powerful hallucinogenic drug. Until recently possession of the latter 3 drugs would have been felony offenses. Under the Justice Reinvestment Initiative passed in the 2015 legislative session possession of these drugs was changed to be misdemeanor, rather than felony, offenses.
